Pilates is a slow controlled form of exercise that concentrates on postural alignment and correct muscle recruitment. Exercises are typically performed in varying positions, e.g. standing, lying, kneeling, in order to challenge your ability to control a good posture. The intensity of the exercises are then progressed using body levers, body weight and a variety of equipment.
Pilates was originally developed by German born Joseph Pilates (1880-
He started developing his exercises during his time as a prisoner of war in the Isle of Man and it was thought that the fitness routines he taught his fellow inmates played a major role in preventing them from contracting the influenza that killed so many others.
When he later emigrated to America his training methods quickly became popular with the dance community who found that his exercise techniques helped to prevent injury and enhance performance. He encouraged the coordination of the mind and body by focusing on posture, breath control, balance and core strength.
The APPI method has developed and adapted Joseph Pilates’ original series of exercises to make them safe and appropriate for most people. Using current research the exercises are designed to help spinal alignment, core strength and body mobility.
